Beyond The Grave 2026

Over at L.I.M.P Zine we absolutely love community events run and organised by the people, for the people. I have lived in Wollongong my whole life attending most events I can, yet, it never stops to excite me when I see a fantastic lineup of bands all dressed up.

Musicians and artists seem to take themselves a little too seriously in this fragmented social media life we present. So when we heard about “Beyond The Grave” we got excited. Great bands and a room full of people dressed up in spooky costumes is bound to be a fantastic night.

We had a chance to have a little chat with Jess and Molly over at GetAClue about their upcoming event Beyond the Grave and what it means to them and the community.

Who and what is Get A Clue?

Get A Clue are a Wollongong-based collective passionate about curating diverse, inclusive and community-focused live music events across Australia.

We aim to create safe, welcoming spaces where everyone feels comfortable being themselves, while bringing people together through music, art, performance and entertainment.

We’re committed to supporting local artists, creatives and our wider community, and creating memorable experiences built around good music, good people and a sense of belonging.

Our names are Jess and Molly! Best friends, musicians and the team behind Get A Clue!

We’ve been playing music together for over 10 years, including in our band Clueless, and have always loved being involved in the community around us. Jess looks after event curation, bookings and community connections, while Molly is the creative brain behind our design, visuals and marketing.

We’re big fans of all genres and are passionate about discovering new music, supporting artists and creating the kinds of events we’d want to go to ourselves.

What is Beyond The Grave and why is this special to you?

Beyond The Grave is our annual Halloween event and also our favourite time of year!

It’s special to us because Halloween gives everyone an excuse to completely lean into their imagination and we wanted to create an event that felt like more than just a regular gig where everyone happens to be wearing a costume. The whole night is designed to feel like an experience, and hopefully give both performers and attendees a space where they can really have fun with it.

Beyond The Grave is extremely special because it was the first show I (Jess) booked outside of our band’s shows and that first show was a bit of a “WOW” moment when I realised how special it is to create something so special where people can just come together, be themselves and have fun.

Who are your favourite Illawarra-based artists at the moment?

I definitely have a long list of local artists that are on replay for me constantly but if I had to shortlist a top 5 that I’ve been loving the most lately it would definitely be LSF, Crown St. Militia, Chelsea Daghita, Ashpit and Creeping Jenny.

I personally have noticed a lack of passion in regards to Halloween outfits recently. A lack of whimsy if you will. So for anyone at home who needs a hand, do you have any suggestions for outfits?

Absolutely! Our biggest advice is to commit to the bit and don’t be scared to go crazy with your outfit!

You don’t need an expensive costume, some of our favourite costumes have been thrown together the day before a show. Just pick a character, a fun concept, something from your favourite movie and take a trip to the op shop! Halloween is probably the one night of the year where you can turn up dressed as something completely unhinged and no one can question it. So what have you got to lose?

What is some advice for people new to event booking and wanting to get involved in the Wollongong scene as an independent?

Go to shows!!! Talk to the bands, photographers, artists, fellow punters, venue staff, other promoters and anyone else involved in the scene. The relationships you build are incredibly important and you will learn so much just from talking to people.

If you’ve got an idea for an event, start figuring out what you need to make it happen. Don’t be afraid to ask the people around you questions.

If you’re putting shows together, make sure you communicate properly and follow through. Reply to people, respect their time and treat everyone involved like professionals. You build a reputation pretty quickly in a local scene, so it’s important to respect others!

Growing up ‘The Grand’ had a pretty rough reputation, so it's amazing to see it being used to showcase some amazing performers. Why have you chosen ‘The Grand’ and have you faced any difficulties in booking venues around Wollongong?

The Grand definitely has a really interesting history in Wollongong, and to us it felt like a fun challenge to hold our heavier night of the Halloweekend there this year. The venue has leaned heavily into electronic music in recent years but it has previously been a home to live bands so we were keen to revive that and put that energy back into the space.

Our good friend Ruby Apps is the organiser of ‘Flamers’ and has been running Friday night parties featuring local DJs and performers at The Grand so we reached out to her to collab with us this year and she linked us up with the venue to bring our ideas to life!

For us, it made sense because it's a space that can accommodate the kind of event we're trying to create. It's got character, and character is really important for us and our events.

Booking venues as an independent promoter can definitely have its challenges and we’re often working with limited resources while trying to prove that our event is going to be worthwhile for both the venue and the artist. But I think Wollongong has a really strong creative community, and when people are willing to take a chance on each other, some really cool things can happen.

When visiting Wollongong what is a must for people to check out? A Wollongong icon?

Home is where the heart is. And our heart is in the Dicey’s Beer Garden.

What's next for Get A Clue?

We’ve got lots of exciting things planned for the new year! The goal is to keep curating interesting events, working with local artists and creating opportunities for the community!

We’ve got plenty of ideas for what's next, and we’re really excited to keep building on what we've started. Hopefully people will stick around, support the events and see where we take it!

It is always so exciting seeing events popping up in your hometown. I still to this day deal with people complaing about how there is nothing to do in Wollongong or how all the bands sound the same, yet, I personally never see these people at shows. So my finial note is before you complain about your local scene, how about you go to more shows and try to support your community because it seems the only thing slowing down your scene is you! See you at the next show. Love Corey
