Daisy Pring brings alt-pop/rnb to the local music scene with her debut EP Treading Water released May 8.

Before you make your way over to La La La’s tomorrow for the Treading Water launch party, let’s get acquainted with Daisy.

The 22 year old from Gerringong has spent her life singing, performing in School Spectacular and Southern Stars from a young age. She showcased her prowess as a singer and honed her stage presence with renditions of songs by artists like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

From years 10-12, Daisy was a part of the Talent Development Project. A program that supports NSW government high school singers, performers, instrumentalists and bands through workshops at their Waterloo studios.

Daisy said, “I graduated in Year 12 from the program. Usually about 100 or so start. They audition for phase one and each phase they cut people out, not in a negative way. It's more just where people are in their stage of the artistry.”

Daisy was one of 10 who graduated her year. She said, “It was great. They do a lot of programs with industry professionals and talk about the business side of being an artist, the performance side, the songwriting side, the production side, everything.”

For the graduation in 2021, Daisy performed at Qudos Bank Arena in Olympic Park and sung her first single, released while in the program, ‘I Don’t Miss You’.

It was at this time, during the program at 18, Daisy had begun to find her sound, inspired by the likes of Ariana Grande and Victoria Monet and settled into the rhythms of songwriting.

In 2023, Daisy released the singles ‘Retrograde’ and ‘Falling Together’ as her first songs out the Talent Development Project and says it was a new learning curve, “It was honestly completely different because with the program we were still nurtured a lot.

“They uploaded it and did all the distribution of the songs because it was on their album. So, I would say it was pretty much like releasing my first single when I did ‘Retrograde’. I did it all independently. I had to teach myself a lot.”

With her debut EP release, Daisy has found her flow. She says, “I've learnt to fully hone in and commit to being an artist.” She says has found confidence in her image and the release cycle of music.

In anticipation for the EP, Daisy released three singles from Treading Water - ‘Reminders’, ‘Anaesthesia’ and ‘July 31st’.

Daisy said, “I'm so excited to finally have my first body of work out. Treading Water is about feeling stuck in one spot when you're trying to move on from someone, and all of the emotions that you go through when you're going through a breakup.”

Treading Water was mixed by Jess Des, a Sydney sound engineer who has worked with artists such as Thelma Plum and Dean Lewis.

It was executively produced by Chelsea Warner who Daisy has been writing with since she was 18.

She said working with Chelsea has been amazing, “We wrote all the songs together, she does all the production, and then a lot of the ad libs and the vocal stacks I've done at home because I live in Gerringong. It’s a little bit of a trek to get up to Sydney sometimes but most of it was done in the studio with her.”

Daisy loved working in the studio, “It’s really helped with my confidence. It's funny, I'm super confident performing live and singing on any stage, that's my favourite part about being a musician.

“But when it comes to being in a studio, it's quite vulnerable. You're in a small space and trying to come up with thoughts, [worrying] about being judged. When you're coming up with lyrics from your personal experiences, it can be tricky.”

Daisy looks up to Chelsea, “I can sometimes get intimidated [by her], but it's been really cool to see how much I've grown when it comes to writing with her.”

Songwriting, Daisy said, “has been a whole different side of the artistry.”

Treading Water came out Thursday 8 May and will have its launch party at La La La’s on Friday 23 May. Supporting Daisy will be Shellharbour’s Amali Dimond who was a semi-finalist for Australian Idol in 2023, Jude2k from Sydney and Wollongong locals singer-songwriter Meadowhip and DJ duo Groove Society.
